In a prelude to the Cannes market, Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios have announced that Italian director Stefano Sollima will lead the helm of the high-budget action-thriller “Sugar Bandits.” Renowned for his work on “Without Remorse,” “Sicario: Day of the Soldado,” and the hit series “Gomorrah,” Sollima’s direction promises an intense cinematic experience.
The film, adapted from Chuck Hogan’s screenplay and novel “Devils In Exile,” will feature Oscar winner Will Smith in the role of a former special forces soldier leading an elite vigilante team dedicated to eradicating the drug trade in Boston. Further casting details are awaited.
Handling worldwide distribution rights, AGC International and CAA Media Finance will spearhead sales at Cannes, with production slated to commence in the fall. Smith, alongside Jon Mone, will produce through Westbrook Studios, while Stuart Ford will produce for AGC Studios, which is fully financing the project. Richard Abate will produce for 3 Arts Entertainment.
Known for his exploration of the intricate dynamics between law enforcement and the criminal underworld, Sollima has a track record of delivering gripping narratives. His recent ventures include the Italian Netflix series “Il Mostro” and the film “Adagio,” which premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
