Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman are set to star in a remake of the 1989 dark comedy “The War of the Roses” titled “The Roses.” Directed by Jay Roach, known for his versatile work in both comedy and drama, the film is currently in development at Searchlight.
In this fresh adaptation, Cumberbatch and Colman will portray Oliver and Barbara Rose, a seemingly perfect married couple living in a grand mansion. However, as Barbara comes to the realization that she no longer loves her husband and holds deep resentment towards him, their marriage takes a tumultuous turn leading to a bitter divorce. The couple’s actions escalate into vindictive acts and conflicts, and even violence ensues as the divorce proceedings unfold.
Cumberbatch will not only star in the film but also produce it under his SunnyMarch banner, alongside Leah Clarke and Adam Ackland. Colman, on the other hand, will produce under her South of the River banner, in collaboration with Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver. Roach and Michelle Graham are also attached as producers.
The screenplay for the remake will be penned by Tony McNamara, known for his work on “Poor Things,” promising a contemporary twist on the classic tale of marital discord and revenge. The original film, directed by Danny DeVito, explored similar themes.
Cumberbatch, acclaimed for his Oscar-nominated performance in “The Imitation Game,” was last seen in Wes Anderson’s “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Meanwhile, Colman, an Oscar winner for her role in “The Favourite,” recently appeared in Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” and is set to star in “Paddington in Peru.”
The project is backed by Jonathan R. Adler and Michael Adler of Adler Entertainment Trust, who will serve as executive producers. Cumberbatch is represented by UTA and Conway van Gelder, while Colman is represented by CAA and United Agents. Roach and McNamara are also represented by UTA, among others.
