In the wake of the release of ‘Animal,’ the film has become a focal point of both admiration and controversy, amassing substantial box office figures while also drawing criticism for its alleged misogynistic undertones and portrayal of female characters.
During an exclusive interview with Galatta Plus, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga responded to the controversies surrounding the film, addressing specific scenes and shedding light on the dynamics between the lead characters, Ranbir Kapoor’s Rajvijay and Rashmika Mandanna’s Geetanjali.
Vanga clarified that certain scenes, such as the intense confrontation triggered by an insult to Rajvijay’s father, were not deliberately staged for controversy. Instead, the focus was on portraying the protagonist’s loyalty and determination to defend his father, adding a dramatic element to the narrative.
Reflecting on the perceived disparity between the lifestyle depicted in the film and real-life experiences, Vanga acknowledged the observation of American culture and highlighted the contrast with Indian values. Despite the characters residing in what appears to be a palace with controlled surroundings, Vanga defended the creative choices, emphasizing the nuanced depiction of independence.
Regarding the scene where Geetanjali gestures for Rajvijay to rest on her lap, Vanga explained that the intention was to convey a nurturing connection, likening the interaction to a child being called by a caregiver.
In response to accusations of misogyny, Vanga asserted that Geetanjali wielded significant influence over Ranvijay, subtly conveyed through various scenes in the film.
‘Animal’ has not only surpassed the remarkable milestone of Rs 500 crore at the domestic box office but has also achieved a staggering Rs 800 crore in global earnings. The film continues to be a topic of discussion, provoking dialogue on its artistic choices and societal implications.
