Colombian singer Shakira expressed her immense excitement as she unveiled a 21-feet-tall statue in her hometown of Barranquilla. The 46-year-old Grammy winner took to Instagram to share her joy, describing the tribute to Colombian women as well as the Barranquilleras both within and beyond her homeland.
The statue, a depiction of Shakira’s iconic dance move from the 2005 hit ‘Hips Don’t Lie,’ was created by artist Yino Marques. The singer’s parents, William Mebarak Chadid and Nidia Ripoll Torrado, along with Mayor of Barranquilla Jaime Pumarejo, were captured in a video admiring the statue for the first time. Several fans were also seen posing in front of the massive sculpture.
Earlier that day, Shakira released a series of photos showcasing the statue. The images featured her parents smiling in front of the statue, a close-up of the sculpture, and the mayor striking a pose alongside her parents.
The dedication on the statue read, in part: “A heart that composes, hips that do not lie, an unmatched talent, a voice that moves masses and bare feet that march for the good of childhood and humanity.” Shakira also shared a photo of her brothers with her father and the mayor.
In the Instagram caption, she expressed happiness in sharing the moment with her parents, especially her mother on her birthday. The post highlighted the joyous occasion with emojis and heartfelt descriptions of each photo, emphasizing the significance of the dedication.
