In a recent revelation during an interview with Saina South Plus, renowned Malayalam screenwriter Sivaram Narayan Swamy, popularly known as SN Swamy, shared intriguing details about the 1988 film ‘Moonnam Mura,’ featuring the Megastar Mohanlal in the lead role. Despite facing challenges from the certification board, the movie achieved significant success and acclaim during its release.
Directed by K Madhu, ‘Moonnam Mura’ marked the third collaboration between SN Swamy and the filmmaker. Swamy disclosed that the climax in the final cut of the film was an alternative version, replacing a scene that received disapproval from the certification board. The initial climax, portraying a scenario where everyone is saved, faced objections due to its negative portrayal of the police. With time constraints preventing an approach to the revising committee, the filmmakers had to hastily reshoot an alternative ending to secure certification, showcasing the police receiving accolades.
During the interview, Swamy recalled an incident where Mohanlal’s mother attended the preview before the censoring process and strongly opposed any attempts to change the climax. She insisted that alterations depicting the police negatively would not be acceptable.
‘Moonnam Mura’ unfolds the story of high-ranking political officials whose bus is hijacked by terrorists demanding the release of their imprisoned colleagues. The narrative takes a significant turn when ex-cop Ali Imran, portrayed by Mohanlal, becomes involved in the negotiation to secure their freedom. The film boasted an ensemble cast, including Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Lalu Alex, Revathi, and Mukesh. Despite the censoring challenges, the movie garnered praise for its gripping plot and stellar performances.
