In a highly anticipated reveal, the upcoming Gundam SEED FREEDOM film has treated fans to a captivating music video for its concluding theme, “Sarigiwa no Romantics” (Romantics Upon Parting), performed by the talented pop duo See-Saw. The film, set to premiere in Japan on January 26, 2024, is situated within the cosmic era of C.E. 75 and promises to be a sequel to the second Gundam Seed television anime, Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny.
Directed by Mitsuo Fukuda, renowned for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, the film boasts character designs by Hisashi Hirai and a script crafted through a collaboration between Fukuda, his late wife Chiaki Morosawa, and scriptwriter Liu Goto.
Adding to the excitement for cinema-goers, the creative team has announced enticing bonuses. Attendees will receive one of two exclusive short stories written by scriptwriter Liu Goto. The narratives, titled “Futari no Tōuhikō” (Escape for Two) and “Gekkō no Walküre” (Valkyrie in the Moonlight), explore intimate moments between characters and offer a deeper look into the military academy days of Agnes, Shin, and Lunamaria.
In a nod to the gaming community, viewers will also be gifted one of two promotional cards for use in the Mobile Suit Gundam: Arsenal Base game. The randomly distributed cards feature designs of Rising Freedom Gundam and Immortal Justice Gundam.
The film’s theme song, “Freedom,” is performed by Takanori Nishikawa (T.M. Revolution) in collaboration with producer t.komuro (Tetsuya Komuro). Meanwhile, the ending song, “Sarigiwa no Romantics,” marks the return of See-Saw to the Gundam franchise after a two-decade hiatus.
This film project is a key component of the Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Project ignited initiative, launched in 2021 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original Mobile Suit Gundam Seed anime. Despite facing challenges following the passing of Chiaki Morosawa in 2016, the project is a testament to her legacy, as she had completed the plot for the Gundam Seed film before her untimely demise in 2008. The film is eagerly awaited by fans and newcomers alike, promising to be a remarkable continuation of the beloved Gundam Seed series.
