The 58th Jnanpith Award for the year 2023 has been conferred upon Swami Rambhadracharya for Sanskrit and Shri Gulzar for Urdu, as announced by the selection committee. Gulzar, also known as Sampooran Singh Kalra, has left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema with his iconic songwriting. Beginning his career with the film ‘Kabuliwala,’ starring Balraj Sahni, Gulzar has contributed to numerous films as a lyricist, scriptwriter, and director.
Noteworthy accolades in Gulzar’s illustrious career include the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu in 2002, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2013, the Padma Bhushan in 2004, and five National Film Awards for his outstanding contributions.
The Jnanpith Award, established in 1961 by Bharatiya Jnanpith, stands as one of the foremost recognitions in Indian literature, alongside the Sahitya Akademi Awards. The award holds significant prestige and honors outstanding achievements in the field of literature.
