Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar, known for his diverse filmography spanning from college romance in “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” to family drama in “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…”, and from exploring human relationships in “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” and “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” to delving into pop culture and gender fluidity in his upcoming film “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani”, emphasizes the importance of continuous reinvention in his filmmaking journey.
Speaking about the transformative process, Johar highlights the need for filmmakers to remain receptive to their surroundings. He states, “Reinvention happens when you actually listen to and observe the environment you are in. It is important to get out of your own bubble, your cocoon, step outside and hear what the audiences and people who work with you have to say.”
Johar further underscores the significance of appreciating the work of fellow filmmakers and being open to new ideas. He shares, “You should also acknowledge the brilliance of others so you can achieve that brilliance on your own. We tend to sometimes, in an industry like this, get very insular. I never wanted to be that person. I read every review, and all the comments (on social media). I also observe what people do in their work. I take feedback very seriously. I believe that a film is a group process as it is a team that makes it and you must spread an atmosphere where people can voice their opinion.”
In his concluding remarks, Johar emphasizes the importance of humility and openness in the creative process. He says, “If you believe what you have is great without asking anyone… it is not going to take you anywhere. If you ask honest questions, you will get honest answers. You cannot have a God complex that only what you think is right. It’s ridiculous. Being fully democratic as a filmmaker has helped my process of reinvention.”
