In a significant development, Tamil actor and politician Thalapathy Vijay has expressed staunch opposition to the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) by the central government. The law, which aims to grant Indian citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries, has stirred intense debate and controversy nationwide.
Vijay, who recently ventured into politics by founding the Tamilaga Vetri Kazham party, voiced his concerns regarding the potential repercussions of the CAA on societal cohesion. Speaking in Tamil, he underscored the importance of maintaining harmony and peace among all residents, irrespective of their backgrounds or beliefs.
“It is unacceptable to enact laws like the Indian Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 (CAA) in an environment where all citizens of the country coexist in social harmony,” Vijay stated. He further urged leaders to ensure that such legislation does not take effect in Tamil Nadu.
In his first political stance since the establishment of his party, the actor-turned-politician called upon the Tamil Nadu government to take decisive measures to prevent the implementation of the CAA within the state’s borders. Vijay’s outspoken stance adds momentum to the ongoing discourse surrounding the contentious citizenship law.
