Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s recent web series “Heeramandi” has sparked both acclaim and controversy following its release earlier this month. While praised for its storytelling, the series has faced criticism for historical inaccuracies and casting choices, particularly regarding Bhansali’s niece, Sharmin Segal, who plays the role of Alamzeb. Bhansali’s decision to cast his niece in a significant role has come under scrutiny.
A viral video has emerged showing Richa Chadha exchanging greetings with Bhansali before joining the cast photo. Some online commentators have interpreted Bhansali’s actions in the video as him moving Chadha aside to ensure his niece, Sharmin Segal, is prominently featured. The clip circulated with a caption implying Bhansali prioritizing his niece’s presence.
Aside from Chadha and Segal, “Heeramandi” boasts a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, and Sanjeeda Sheikh in prominent roles. The series also features Shekhar Suman, Fardeen Khan, Taha Shah, and Adhyayan Suman portraying nawabs to the tawaifs. Chadha plays the role of Lajjo, a courtesan with a captivating persona.
In an interview with IANS, Chadha explained her decision to choose the character Lajjo over a role with more screen time in “Heeramandi.” She stated, “When I was approached for the project, Sanjay was the showrunner, and I was offered another role that undoubtedly had more screen time. However, as an actor, it’s essential to explore new facets of oneself, so I opted for Lajjo, considering the fresh elements it offered me.”
Set against the backdrop of the Indian freedom struggle in the 1940s, “Heeramandi” offers an epic narrative intertwined with themes of love, power, revenge, and freedom. The series has been available for streaming on Netflix since May 1.
