In the wake of the immense success of “Red, White & Royal Blue,” Amazon MGM Studios has given the green light for a sequel to the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel. The original film, which ranked among the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time for the platform, has spurred the development of its follow-up.
Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, stars of the first film, are set to reprise their roles in the sequel. Matthew López, who made his feature debut with the initial installment, returns to co-write the script alongside McQuiston. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Films will produce the sequel, with Michael McGrath and López joining the production team. McQuiston will serve as an executive producer.
“Red, White & Royal Blue,” released last August, tells the story of Alex Claremont-Diaz (portrayed by Perez), who becomes entangled in a feud with Prince Henry (played by Galitzine) following an altercation captured by the tabloids. What begins as a staged truce between the rivals blossoms into a genuine romance, complicating political dynamics on both sides of the Atlantic.
The plot details of the sequel remain undisclosed. The announcement of its development came during a Q&A session following a screening of the original film at the Culver Theater.
The first film proved to be a massive hit for Amazon, becoming the top-watched film worldwide during its initial three weeks of release. It also reportedly drove a significant increase in subscribers for the streaming platform.
Galitzine, currently starring in Prime Video’s “The Idea of You” alongside Anne Hathaway, and Perez, known for his roles in “The Kissing Booth” films and Starz’s “Minx,” continue to attract attention in the industry.
Galitzine is represented by Curtis Brown Group, WME, Anonymous Content, Gang, Tyre, Ramer, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Perez is represented by Paradigm, Principal Entertainment LA, and Felker Toczek Suddleson. López is represented by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Gang, Tyre, Ramer. McQuiston is represented by KT Literary, UTA, and Alexander, Lawrence, Frumes & Labowitz.
