In a recent development, the late Hollywood star Matthew Perry’s social media handle is reported to have been hacked, drawing attention from various media outlets. Perry’s X handle fell under scrutiny as crypto scammers engaged in fraudulent activities aimed at exploiting the actor’s charity website.
The Matthew Perry Foundation, established in honor of the ‘Friends’ star, became a target when it was observed that a donation link redirected users to a suspicious copycat website. The foundation’s official Instagram account posted a warning, stating, “We have received reports that Matthew’s official X page has been hacked and is directing users to a fraudulent site soliciting donations via cryptocurrency.” The post urged followers not to donate to the fraudulent site and to refrain from sharing misleading posts on social media.
In response to the situation, the Foundation advised followers to stay vigilant and report any impostor accounts. They shared the official website for fans to make donations.
Matthew Perry passed away tragically in October 2023, with the cause of death ruled as an accident resulting from the “acute effects of ketamine.” Known for his role as Chandler Bing in ‘Friends,’ Perry was found unresponsive in the pool at his residence. Despite battling substance abuse and addiction, the actor remained committed to supporting others facing similar struggles. A foundation was established posthumously to continue his charitable work and aid individuals dealing with addiction.
Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston, who portrayed Rachel Green, has been actively supportive of the foundation and its outreach work. Perry was recently honored in the in-memoriam segment at the SAG Awards. However, BAFTA faced criticism from fans for omitting the actor from their segment. The organizing committee defended their decision, stating that Perry would be honored at their TV awards segment.
